Restored Ford T Model
On Thursday 26 March, the Romsey Men’s Shed opened its doors for a special occasion, unveiling a completely restored 1925 Ford T Model to the public for the first time. Around 200 people from across the Macedon Ranges and even metropolitan Melbourne turned out for the ceremony, along with six other restored T Models driven by enthusiasts who had travelled long distances to share in the moment.
The story of the restoration began in September 2022 when well known Romsey identity Doug Newnham donated a T Model chassis, motor, drive train and various parts to the shed. The condition of the vehicle was so poor that when it was collected from Doug’s premises by forklift onto a trailer on 12 September 2022, there was genuine concern it might break apart in the process. But a positive attitude prevailed and the team rose to the challenge.
Led by Jeff Smith and Paul Green, shed members worked tirelessly over the following years, sourcing parts from across Australia and in some cases globally, reflecting the international interest that still surrounds this revolutionary vehicle. Many local small businesses and individuals also gave their time and expertise to help bring the restoration as close to original condition as possible.
The project was completed in less than four years and in a remarkable coincidence, the restoration was finished on the 100th anniversary of the vehicle’s original registration in Gisborne in 1926. The T Model is a 1925 Canadian built version, originally sold by Gardners Garage in Gisborne. Adding to the occasion, Peter Gardner, son of the original proprietor, was among those in attendance on the day.
Doug Newnham has signed the T Model over to the shed in perpetuity as a community asset, to be used for display and community events. The shed’s catering team kept the crowd well fed with a free sausage sizzle, coffee and tea, and a beautiful Autumn day provided the perfect backdrop for the occasion.
The project has been a true success story for the Romsey Men’s Shed, bringing members together around a landmark restoration and raising the shed’s profile in the community. With construction of a new adjacent building commencing shortly, the T Model will soon have a fitting home to be displayed and enjoyed for years to come.
