Japanese Researchers to Tour Victorian Men’s Sheds
The VMSA is pleased to welcome Dr Ayahito Ito and Dr Risa Takashima, leading researchers from Hokkaido, Japan, who will tour a selection of Victorian Men’s Sheds from 27 October to 1 November. Their visit will explore the global reach and impact of the Men’s Shed movement.
The tour will be guided by Professor Barry Golding AM, renowned for his extensive research into men’s wellbeing, learning and community leadership. Professor Golding has played a key role in documenting the rise of the Men’s Shed movement both in Australia and internationally. His 2015 book The Men’s Shed Movement: The Company of Men provided the first comprehensive global history of Sheds, while his 2021 publication Shoulder to Shoulder: Broadening the Men’s Shed Movement highlighted their growing influence in countries such as the US, Canada, Denmark, Iceland and Kenya.
Dr Ito and Dr Takashima’s visit presents an exciting opportunity to showcase the diversity and strength of Victorian Sheds. By meeting members firsthand, they will gain insight into how Sheds foster connection, improve men’s health and contribute to community wellbeing. Their research in Japan reflects the growing international recognition of the importance of spaces where men of all ages can connect, share skills and find purpose.
The VMSA looks forward to joining Professor Golding in welcoming our international guests and highlighting the unique role Victorian Sheds play in a movement that is now truly global.
