VMSA EXECUTIVE OFFICER REPORT

Hello Fellow shedders.

Many Sheds are being approached by CENTRELINK asking Sheds to host Volunteers as part of their Mutual Obligation Program. It is a very complicated issue as the Shed insurers must be checked with, to see if the program is covered by the Shed’s insurance. Many Sheds are offering membership to these people from outside agencies. They are guests/ visitors or external participants, but they are not bona fide members. The VMSA has had several cases of these external people demanding membership and then attempting to take over the Shed. In one case all the original members were driven out. Please always remember membership of your Shed is a privilege and shouldn’t be offered to anyone who is not a bona fide Shedder.

Strengthening Men’s Sheds Grants are open. $879,000 is now available for communities across Victoria, who can apply for funding to build a new shed or refurbish an existing shed through the Men's Shed Program.

Men's Sheds enhance the health and well-being of both individuals and communities as a whole by reducing social isolation and promoting social inclusion.

New build grants of up to $60,000 are available to:

  • construct a new Men's Shed
  • redevelop an existing Men's Shed
  • co-locate a Men’s Shed within a multifunction community facility or hub.

Refurbishment grants of up to $30,000 are available for:

  • modifications to meet health and safety and/or disability access standards
  • modifications to meet public access needs
  • modifications to increase shed capacity
  • refurbishments to expand activities based on community demand.

The 2017 grant guidelines and application can be downloaded here:

Men's Shed Grant Guidelines March 2017 (PDF 787KB)

Men's Shed Grant Guidelines March 2017 (Word 163KB)

To make an application, contact the Department of Health and Human Services Local Connections Team in your area to discuss your project. It is strongly recommended that you also seek advice from the Victorian Men’s Shed Association.

Ric Blackburn

VMSA Executive Officer.

VMSA PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Further to the VMSA’s “Special Bulletin” on the 1st April regarding the 4 States in Conversation, this meeting was held on the 29th & 30th March at Tullamarine. AMSA was represented by Kevin Callinan, OAM, Chairman of the AMSA Board, and Paul Sladdin, a Skills Based Director. The Chairman is now arranging a Board meeting to discuss the outcomes of the above meeting, and the Board’s position regarding the agreements and understandings made. It is anticipated that the next meeting of all the States and Territories and the AMSA Board will occur in late May or early June after the AMSA Board meeting.

Some Clusters of Sheds around the State have already asked for someone who was present at the above meeting to bring their Cluster up-to-date and I am travelling around to those Cluster meetings for that purpose. If you would like your Cluster to have someone visit could you please contact the Executive Officer or myself.

State Government and several members of the State Committee, with Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) staff representatives, attended the TV/audio hook-up for the information session on the new Strengthening Men’s Shed Grant Programme. There is $879,000 being made available to assist with the building of new Sheds, and for refurbishment projects. For further information please refer to the VMSA Website www.vmsa.org.au or contact Ric Blackburn, Executive Officer.

At the Bendigo Gathering on the 17th March the VMSA through its sponsors was very pleased to give away over $57,000 of tools and sandpaper to its member Sheds. The VMSA is most grateful to “Ozito Industries” and to “Bosch Australia” who, at the right time, continually come up with donations of expensive tools for our members who attend the VMSA Gatherings.  The VMSA is also grateful for the sandpaper from “SIA Abrasives Australia” that is very generously given for distribution to our members at our Gathering. There was well over one and half tons in weight in the sandpaper that was given away to our members. (Value approx. $37,000). The VMSA also wishes to thank “Chevington Tools Pty Ltd” for their display and support at the Bendigo Gathering.

I would encourage all Sheds and their members to try and attend the June Gathering at Inverloch and to note that at the AGM this year the VMSA will be celebrating 10 years of operation as an incorporated body. Celebrations are being planned close to the Brimbank Men’s Shed on the 24th November so please try and keep that date and evening free.

I have been impressed with the fantastic work that Sheds around the State are undertaking and the programmes that they are running, not only for the Shedders but for the general community. I have read of some of the successful health and well-being programmes that Sheds have been undertaking for their members and the community. Great work guys, and many thanks for this. The feedback, newsletters and other information that the VMSA receives from your Shed assists the VMSA in presenting such information to the State Government and other stakeholders. This data helps us to justify the continuation of such funding for (i) the new Shed grants, (ii) the refurbishment of Sheds grants, (iii) for the VMSA for the Executive Officer and (iv) towards some of our expenses. Our goal is to keep the Government and our other stakeholders fully aware of our activities and hopefully, through these efforts, of increasing that funding which, in turn, enables the VMSA to continuing to assist its members and give advice to new Sheds. We have grown from approximately 34 member Sheds in 2007 to now over 325 Sheds, with about 40 new Sheds about to join, and at the present growth rate we need more assistance in the office and in the field..

VMSA President, Lindsay Oates

HYUNDAI VMSA PARTNERSHIP

The VMSA has recently received approval from Hyundai Motor Company Australia as an authorised Association to participate under the Hyundai National Fleet discount programme.

This approval allows any member of a Shed that is a member of the Victorian Men’s Shed Association to be eligible to receive a National Fleet Discount on the purchase of a new Hyundai motor vehicle.

The VMSA will need to send a Letter of Introduction confirming your eligibility, and on production of the letter to the Hyundai dealer you will receive the National Fleet discount on your purchase.

This discount is set, based on the model chosen and the specification level, and can vary from $1,500.00 to $6,500.00.

In addition to this discount, Hyundai Motor Company Australia also recommends a Dealer Delivery fee of $695.00 as a part of these arrangements.

There is no cost to a Shed member to participate in this programme, and the National Fleet Discount received is deducted from the purchase price of the vehicle, thus reducing your costs to upgrade your vehicle.

As a part of the arrangements under this deal, the VMSA will receive a “Spotters Fee” from the dealer of $500.00 for introducing the purchaser.

Conditions

  1. This deal is only available to members of the Sheds, and the vehicle purchased MUST be registered in the member’s name.
  2. Only one discount is available per member per annum.

FIRST DELIVERY UNDER HYUNDAI NATIONAL FLEET PROGRAMME

The first purchase under this programme was by Alan Hoy of the Leongatha Men’s Shed and Alan collected his new Hyundai Tucson from his local dealer Edney’s Leongatha on Friday 21st April 2017.

VALE SOAPY VALANCE

The Victorian Men’s Shed Association would like to acknowledge the recent sad passing of Peter “Soapy” Vallance.

“Soapy” was an original member of the Committee of Management of the VMSA.

His work in the community and in particular Men’s Sheds was invaluable to the development of Men’s Sheds.

“Soapy” will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

A service of celebration was held at St Mary’s Catholic Church, 129 Woods St, Donald.

The cortege then left for the Donald Lawn Cemetery.

NATIONAL VIETNAM VETERANS MUSEUM

Inverloch Men’s Shed Pays Tribute

On Thursday 6th April, 12 members of the Inverloch Men’s Shed took the community bus to the National Vietnam Veterans’ Museum on Philip Island.  On arrival they were warmly greeted by John Walton, a volunteer and committee member of the Museum. The visit commenced with a film recording the involvement of Australian personnel in the Vietnam conflict. All agreed it gave them a better understanding of what actually happened and was deeply moving.

A guided tour followed, as John explained how the Museum came into being and how the committee obtained the land they are now on when the original location in San Remo became too small to cater for all the visitors. He then led a tour of all the various exhibits and the men were especially interested to see the Centurion tank, the troop carrier and 3 helicopters, including a Cobra helicopter on loan from the US army. The Museum has a massive display of memorabilia such as treasured letters and medals on loan from family and friends of Australian troops.

All Shed members agreed that the visit was truly memorable and they thoroughly recommend it as an inspiring place to visit. Also they can recommend the delicious lunches served in the Nui Dat Café. Homemade chicken pies and beef and burgundy pies to die for!

The museum can be contacted on 5956 6400.

VMSA OFFICE SPACE

HELP REQUIRED

The VMSA need your help; we are looking for a permanent home.

Since the formation of the VMSA in September 2007, we have been operating from many homes, the homes of our committee members, and the home of our Community Development Officer, then our Admin Officer, and more recently our Executive Officer.

While this has worked well in the past, we now have in excess of 350 Sheds in Victoria, and we need to find a home to allow us to continue to look after our members.

As we look to enter our 10th year this “new” home will be paramount to allow us to accept more donated goods and materials. It will allow us room to check, test and sort these goods, and the ability to accept a greater range of goods.

It will also allow us to have some office space, so Ric Blackburn has a workplace, where he can utilise volunteers, university graduates, and in time, supervise additional staff members.

It is somewhere we can have guests, sponsors, supporters to come to meet us, where we can promote the Men’s Sheds in Victoria and the advantages of becoming a Shedder.

It is a place where the committee can meet, presentations can be made, where we can provide information and training for Shedders and Shed Committees of Management, and where we can organise product display nights. The uses of such a building are endless.

Our “ideal home” would be a factory or warehouse of about 350m2 located in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, with parking available and truck access for loading and unloading of materials and goods.

We would like to have a reception area, 3 or 4 offices, a kitchen / kitchenette, toilets, and ideally a large room (capable of seating 25 people) as a meeting / training / board room.

In addition, it would be a warehouse / storage facility capable of having pallet racking for the checking, storage and subsequent distribution of donated products.

With almost 17,500 members of 350 Sheds in Victoria, someone may know of a property that might fit the above criteria, that may be available at a peppercorn rental. Please contact Ric Blackburn at the VMSA on 0418 465 228 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with the details of such a property and the contact details.

VMSA FACEBOOK

The VMSA has received a number of queries and requests to find an avenue where sheds can easily list and advertise surplus items they have that they wish to donate to other sheds, or to promote activities that the Sheds are involved in - such as market days, or fundraisers.

The VMSA has recently created and trialled a Facebook page, this is now available to all sheds and shedders to join, and to place your ads and info on.

Please note this is not the avenue if you wish to sell your surplus good, it is only if you want to donate the goods.
There are plenty of sites available such as eBay or Gumtree if you are looking to sell an item, The Facebook page is VMSA - Public Notices, you can search for it or go to,
